For those of you who know me, I'm hopeful that you will agree that I'm not a "sh** disturber". As such, I'm hopeful that my post will be well received and spark an honest conversation between P1/P2 competitors.
Firstly, let me open by saying that I realize that every racing series that has rules has people that don't necessarily agree with them. That said, I've had a large number of calls, emails and at the track discussions with competitors that are VERY UNHAPPY about the current rule structure. Funny thing is that these discussions aren't just with P1 nor are then limited to bike engine or car engine guys. It seems to me that EVERYONE is unhappy with the current P1/P2 rules in one way or another.
As we all approach one of the more exciting Runoff's in history I thought it might make sense to have a discussion here about what those rules should look like on that day.
So let me start the ball rolling:
I'm driving P1 in a 1L car. My car must weigh a minimum of 1000 lbs and the best engine I can find will make about 185hp and 95 foot pounds of torque at the wheels. What I'm not happy about is that I feel like I can't compete fairly with cars that make 250+ hp and 170 foot pounds of torque. As a 1L driver, I may need to dump the 1L for a very expensive upgrade to a Busa which would include chassis mods. I cant get more power out of my 1L but the CRB seems unwilling to consider lower weights to balance the class again. I know that we added 100lbs to these cars years ago, but that was a paper exercise. I think that the track numbers are showing that some weight needs to come off of these cars to be competitive. I don't want to see us go back to 900lbs for MANY reasons but is 950 or 975 out of the question?
NOTE: I know that nothing that we write here will get anything changed but I'm hopeful that if we can reach some agreement here that the CRB might listen to the letter (or 50) that might follow this discussion.
