Books on Race Driving |

I'm often asked "what is the best book on race driving" or "what books should I read on driving". I would like to find out which ones you guys think are essential. Please submit your favorities, and maybe a short note on why you like it.
Thanks Doug |

All of them! That's like asking "which is your favorite child?" You might pick up one or two things from each book but read as many as you can. You can not single out one or two.

Charlie:
Ok, that may be true although I have a few that I wouldn't bother to read again but you must have a priority list. Which ones would you read first through third? Doug |

There are 2 layers to that question, the total beginner, and someone with a little background.
The problem is books are written in general to be sold and make a profit, to do that they have way too much padding to get the feel of the subject, much like sitting on the tub floor Vs a padded seat. Having said that in any of the books I have read there was a lot to skip without missing anything. The best book has not been written yet simply because the subject is being advanced by its own momentum and a new book is obsolete in a very short time. Here are my dated thoughts: One of the first books I read about driving is one I still feel is a good starting point Driving in Competition by Alan Johnson; this book is old but much of the book is still worth the reading. Competition Driving by Alain Prost and Pierre-Francois Rousselot is a very interesting read and certainly full of driving insights and technique. Drive to Win by Carroll Smith has to be high on the early read list. Winning: A Race Drivers Handbook by George Anderson is dated having been written in the early 90s but is aimed at the SCCA beginner and worth the time for some looking to get started. People who ask the question come from so many different backgrounds and experience levels giving advice almost has to be an interrogation of their life experience. Competition Car Suspension by Allan Staniforth is a great history lesson and the subject mater is understandable enough for almost any background. Regardless of racing car class a book on areo such as Competition Car Downforce by Simon McBeath provides an understanding of how areo is at work on every racecar. Interesting question Doug, and what were the first books your read? What were the most important? David |

Twist of the wrist is quite good as well, I got a little less use out of T.O.T.W 2 but it was alright. The second book makes you pick through a bit of thinly veiled Scientologism but it shouldn't dissuade you from giving it a read.

Books on Driving | #10 | ||

Perhaps one of the best books ever written on driving is:
The Technique of Motor Racing (Driving) (Hardcover) by Piero Taruffi with the forward by Fangio. Start with the basics. Eric Scheible |

Basics | #11 | ||

"Going Faster"- Carl Lopez
The "official" book of Skip Barber Racing School includes "pearls of wisdom" by a good number of past and present Skippy instructors. A superb collection and my vote for both those starting out as well as for those more advanced in experience and technique. Second favorite is "Driving in Competition"- Alan Johnson. Even better than Taruffi's book and more relevant to those on this forum. Bentley's series is a great examination of the "psyche" required to go fast and how to develop it. Most folks past a certain point have had enough of the "technique" books and need something that communicates the "hows" past the "whys." Paul Frere's book is very good. Agree with Arken, a majority of the Senna, Prost, Bondurant books are just to extend the legacy of the author and are near worthless for anything other than a superficial study of the author's personal experience and approach. Not very good nor particularly useful.

Tigaman wrote: I have to disagree, Peter. While these books may seem superficial and less tecfhnical, IF the racer picks up only one or two techniques or insights that makes him a quicker, safer or more effective racer then the small cost is definitely worth it. There are several such techniques/insights in the Senna/Prost/Lauda books (IMO.)

What I said was.... | #13 | ||
|
What I said was "Having said that in any of the books I have read there was a lot to skip without missing anything." not that the books were not
worth reading. The Alan Prost book has some very good tips and information and is one of my favorites. I read Bondurant's book and cannot remember it, and
Bob taught me how to teach race car driving, I was a fill in instructor for some of his schools where he needed more than is regular instructors.
Two of my favorite magazines are Speedway and Circle Track both of which cover mostly circle track and NASCAR, I'm a big fan of both. David |
