Registered User Posts: 761 11/13/05 22:22:12	Tags : None It was a relief to finally see some good road racing on Speed Channel - and no NASCAR Congrats to Arnie - and Stan. That's the first time in years that I've seen a car prepared to last just to the finish line. What exactly happened, Stan? Arnie was certainly the most modest winner we've seen in a while... and I think Stan got about as much camera time. Was it my imagination or did Arnie never really use all the grip available - he drove very conservatively to my eye. I was disapointed that the announcers never mentioned the engine differences between the Swift and the Maloy. And what was the deal with the crap images on the Speed in car camera? I hope he didn't have to give $2K for that. Too bad Jeff Miller dropped out - maybe his camera would have worked better. And Rennie - how do you get your hair to look so cool after you pull your helmet off? Clark

Clark, the engine shut down due to a short in the chassis harness right where it turns the corner at the back of the tub. Quitting as soon as the race was complete perfectly fulfilled Dr Porsche's famous dictum: A race car should fall apart immediately after crossing the finish line. Your observations about Arnie's driving are spot on as usual, Clark. As soon as I saw Treadway had stopped I radioed Arnie to tell him to slow down a bit, since he had a 30-sec lead. Arnie backed off and started running 1:25's; just nursing the car home. I think it quit 3 or 4 times during the last several laps, but he was able to get it to restart by flipping the ignition switch off then back on. We were really on pins and needles for the last half of the race! Stan

It was an example of the time,effort and passion it takes to achieve the goals one sets for himself. It was quite refreshing to see. I have not posted my Runoffs experiences because they are still a bit too painfull. Watching the race today brought back all that I thought was starting to fade. I have been very lucky at the Runoffs, with a third and two firsts in just 4 visits to Mid-Ohio. As I told Sandy at the end of the race, I am a passionate racer. I guess I just wear my heart on my sleeve. Like everyone at the Runoffs, I was putting a lot of pressure on myself, and it ain't over 'til it's over. Additionally, I was concerned about Rennie after he failed to come around after the green flag. Once the race is over, I guess I just let it go. I was hoping for a one-two in CSR for my 'two boys', but I was really tickled that Arnie was able to bring it home in first. So many things could have gone wrong, and with the electrical challenges of the car, it would have been very difficult to hold off Jacek or Rennie had they survived that first turn. Oh yeah, I know that success occurs when preparedness meets opportunity, but we were very fortunate! BTW, I've already been retained for the 2006 Runoffs...

It seemed like a number of times they called the wrong car, and then would make comments that didn't make sense, or were flat out wrong. I thought the pit reporting, however, was quite good. -Matt

Posts: 20 11/14/05 11:25:30	Keeping track of 725 cars and all the info that goes with them can be quite a job. The mistakes made during the brodcast were typical for Runoffs brodcasts. Two corrections that I can offer: 1. Treadway holds the lap record at VIR in a F/SCCA car, not a CSR. 2. The crewchief (me) never said the engine blew up. It was an open short in the chassis loom that caused Arnie's engine to shut down at the keyhole - fortunately AFTER taking the checkered flag! I had this same problem on another 008 last year, but that one gave plenty of warning (as little stumbles) before going catatonic. Arnie called me on the radio to tell me it happened the first time, but within less than a dozen laps it was terminal - hence my acknowledgement above that we were very fortunate in the race. Bummer for you guys, Mike, but somehow I have a feeling that you'll be back next year at full chat! Stan

To many of us, we knew details that the announcers would have never known, but to the average viewer I would bet it was fine. The glaring "miss" was when Arnie and Jeremy went side by side for a lap or so. Somebody at the track had it on video and it was the best racing I saw all weekend. I'd like to make some other points on the race. Jeremy was on "grooved" intermediate tires. The Maloy CSR-1 Jeremy drove was not a factory car. It is a "track day" car on the east coast and Jeremy made the deal to run the car on his own. The George Dean built ZX12R motor in the car does belong to Phoenix Race Cars, Inc. The engine program is still being developed and we're still doing testing. The Maloy CSR-1 Jeremy drove was the first customer car we built and the first CSR we've built. The car had no "trick" aero parts or any of our newly developed undertray items. So I guess my point is that Jeremy Treadway put a car with a "test" motor (doesn't mean it wasn't a good one though) and no tunnels or ground effects in the lead at the Runoffs. This reflects very highly on Jeremy's driving abilities and the abilities of Mike Agnifilo and his team at Stonebridge Sports & Classics. We fully intend to have a Phoenix CSR-1 at the Runoffs in '06 and it will have the fully developed ZX12R engine and it will be sporting some newly developed aero pieces that I think will make the car extremely competitive. As far as the broadcast went, we all obviously knew what happened beforehand, but it was still a shame to see all those cars get knocked out in the first turn. It took some of the drama out of it, for me at least. Good duel between Arnie and Jeremy though.

Posts: 10 11/14/05 16:17:10	They had Rennie on intermidiates as well and far as I know, we had either rains or dry tires (no grooved slicks) and we went out on the latter. Also, several laps went by before they called us out of the race. Kind of odd to mention all the other cars that went off and continued and not mention the one plainly visible in the gravel. Overall though, the coverage was good. Stan, ya looked good on the tube! Here's to seeing you there again next year. Do tell... (assuming you can) who picked you up for '06? Dave Rich

Mark Ishikawa and I were discussing plans for 2006 recently and in light of the 014's non-eligibility for the Champcar Atlantic series, he is planning to go to the Runoffs. BTW, I think the commentators got the idea of intermediates from the H-prod guys who raced immediately ahead of us. I watched it on TV and a couple of crews and drivers mentioned going out on "intermediates" for their race. Then they saw you guys changing Rennie's tires on pre-grid, and I presume, jumped to the same conclusion. Understandable, if erroneous. At least Greg didn't make any anti-Atlantic comments this year!

Posts: 6 11/14/05 19:51:05	Since we are setting the record straight regarding what was reported on Speed yesterday, I did not run out of fuel at the end of the race. Once I got home and investigated the issue I found the problem to be a bad connection at the fuel pump relay plug in. This was caused by removing the fuel pump relay to install jumper wires to pump the fuel tank. After going through the fuel pressure on the ECU, I counted 38 times that the car lost fuel pressure for longer then 2 seconds during the race. The first major loss of fuel pressure came early in the race coming out of turn 8. The relay stopped for 5 seconds and started up again after I flipped the ignition switch off and on. The relay finally quit all together at the Keyhole during the cool down lap and I had to get towed in. I guess it was just my lucky day. Thanks for a great race, Arnie

That's what I told Arnie I thought it was, and since he never corrected me, I assumed that's what it turned out to be... I'm glad to be wrong, though, as fixing the chassis loom is a real PITA...!

Posts: 20 11/16/05 02:14:03	Now Matt,.......Don't be modest. We did add a Gurney flap! I do have to thank the car owner Alan Vernon. Without him we would never had the chance to be at the Runoffs in CSR. Alan let Jeremy race this car all year at no charge and at times gave up the seat to Jeremy so we could get in the nationals we needed to get to the Runoffs. Alan has been a great customer for years and I hope many more. Alan saw the raw tallent that Jeremy had and wanted to give him a shot at a national championship as did I. I also have to thank Matt Conrad for all the support he gave us this year. You WILL NOT find a manufacture more dedicated to his product. And I would also like to thank George (beer,money,women) Dean who can get TRUE horsepower out of a motorcycle engine (watch the tape!) and is also as dedicated to his product as one could be. These guys are not happy unless the customer is happy! You guys were a pleasure to work and be with this year. I just wish the final outcome was a bit different.
