As reported by Ed (siftless) Dickinson:
Race report is as follows: All the DSR's were pitted together. Mike Schmidt, Chip Haddock, Brian Little, Jerry Dykhuisen, Jim Bonsey and me. Bob Urso and Tony Bronco were the only DSRs not pitted with us in the garage. They wanted to work out of their trailer. First qualifying was Saturday 8:00 A.M. Slippery, cold track. Chip Haddock spun in his oil in the western horseshoe. Destroyed his beautiful new carbon nose (work of art) and front components. Had no spares. Mike blew a valve cover gasket. Repairable but
messy. Bob qualified with a 2:06 and I qualified with a 2:03. Others qualified with 2:11 +. Second qualifier was uneventful and stayed the same other than Brian's nose exploding at 140 mph on the front straight. Man, you can imagine what he was thinking and feeling (Atlanta all over again). However, Brian managed to keep the car off the wall and brought the car in. Luckily had a spare nose. No improvements by any of the DSR drivers time wise. I could not do the second qualifier because my primary clutch was stuck on the PT shaft. At this point my weekend was becoming crisis management. No needed clutch change(s), and could not replace the old belt. I was pretty discouraged at this point because I did not believe I could
finish the race with the old belt. However, this belt was one of the prototypes given to me by Gates Rubber. Boy, what a belt it ended up being.
Race started with almost 50 entrants in group 1. I managed to win the DSR race finishing 12 overall. However, clutch settings were way off. Tires had three weekends on them already and after the 4th lap were totally gone. Car at low speed handled like a pig. Fortunately for me and unfortunately for
Bob Urso, he had water in his gas tank and fell out of the race on the first lap. My best time during the race was a 2:06. Probably was running consistently 2:08's. Bob probably would have caught me! Second place was Jerry. Third place was Tony Bronco.
