How much do components weigh? |
Lead | ||
|
Because weight is important, it would be good to know how much a part weighed. For instance, what is the weight of a tholen upright? What is the weight of a shohr upright? How about brake callipers: AP Racing, Wilwood, Brembo? If you have a compenent, weigh it and let us know how much it weighs so we can compare.

Shalo,
This would be a very large list. There are literally hundreds of parts on each car. When you consider the various brands and models of a given component, a complete list would have thousands of entries. Your example of brake calipers alone is a great example. Each manufacturer make several models - two pucks or four. Even a given model, like the Wilwood Dynalite 2, can come in cast and billet varieties. This is a monumental task! |

I remember this topic somewhere else on the Forum. I listed weight for a bunch of stuff.

I couldn't agree with you more Tom. It is a monumental task. And it is quite probable that as this thread grows, some adjustments will have to be made in classifying the components. And yes, there are many components on a car but for now we can stick to some of the major ones that racfers look at like wheels, calipers, uprights, etc. Also, some of the major compnents such as engines and trans can be bunched up. I dont think anyone is going to be overly concerned with the weight of a stearing wheel but unsprung weight is a consideration. After asll, this is a web site for the car builder. :-)

Wheel weight is one area of significance due to rotating mass/ flywheel effect and unsprung weight. The lightest wheels are Kodiak, OZ racing, and a few others such as Techno, Jongbloed, Jon Horgas's wheel's. All are about the same, 6"-7lbs., 8"-8lbs., 10"-9lbs. Most cast aluminum wheels weigh 4-6lbs. more per wheel.There is also a significant weight difference in race tires. A front Goodyear 20x6x13 on 6" rim vs. a front Avon radial 21.6x8x13 on 8" rim is about 5lbs.However, choosing race tires on the basis of weight should not be the primary consideration. The bottom line is that your car weight could vary by 50# based on your choice of wheels and tires. Tom

The heaviest component | #5 | ||

The heaviest component in most DSR's is the driver. Fortunately modifications are permitted -- thank goodness there still is no "flat bottom" rule for this component.
