All ducted air which exits through the top of the bodywork behind the rear of the front tires, excluding the cockpit opening, fender louvers, or slots, louvers, grills and similar devices for allowing heat to escape the engine bay, shall pass through a heat exchanger.

I'm in the body mock up stage. I have a Lincspeed body in pieces. Just for laughs I looked at the GCR for the bodywork wording. I see that the wording was
changed for 2008. Can someone explain to me what the change was supposed to accomplish or, put another way, outlaw? I see the Stohr, Mallen Alley and Dauntless
have air that exhausts "up" behind the rear of the front wheels. With the wording in the rules can I still have the diffuser air exit both into the
radiator inlet and out the side/top as well as take free air into the radiator?

Hi Duane,
The change for 2008 was to specifically permit air that escapes the ducting through the cockpit, sides, louvers, etc. not violate the prior requirement that such air first pass through a radiator (heat exchanger). Think of it as just a "clean-up" of the previous verbiage. You should be fine with your Lincspeed bodywork. Stan |

Under the old rule you could have air pass thru the body and exit anywhere you would like and long as it was not "ducted" to provide down force and if it was "ducted" for a heat exchanger it all went there. Does the new wording allow the same thing or is it more restrictive?
2007 GCR "It is not permitted to duct air through any part of the bodywork for the purpose of providing aerodynamic downforce on the car.
All ducted air for heat exchangers (water/oil) shall pass through these heat exchangers."

That section of the rules has been ignored for years, essentially ever since Yacek Mucha came up with his designs (in the early 2000s?) The stewards claimed that air ducted out the side of the body work did not contribute to downforce (no matter what it did inside the bodywork). One of the more recent examples is the front wing on several cars that would not work nearly as well (as a WING) without the opening (duct) behind it to allow air to pass rather freely over and beyond it. It has also been common practice to place grillwork or louvers in the bodywork that covers the engine compartment to allow heat to escape. The idea was not to penalize competitors for such things.
