Registered User Posts: 89 10/21/09 03:09:59	I did a track-day at T-Hill last Sunday. 70 degrees F and humid. Redline 10-40 racing oil. I let the stock 2008 Haysbusa idle for 20 minutes before each session and oil temp would only get to 130 degrees. What should the oil temp get to before full throttle is used? Highest temp. after session was 180 degrees. I used the same cooler with the previous 954 Honda and temp would get above 160 after 10 minute idle and max. at 230 degrees under similar conditions. Any thoughts on using a thermostatically controled bypass device on cooler lines? I drive this car on the street and on a 60 degree day it is difficult to get oil hot enough to feel right about near or full throttle. Thanks Herman

Registered User Posts: 507 10/21/09 11:20:18	You need a bypass 'stat inline. You need to get the oil to 190 or so and keep it there. Otherwise the oil can't do it's cleaning job, and you risk over-pressurizing the system. Either that, or tape over part of the cooler (temp solution) Tom

Registered User Posts: 90 10/21/09 11:57:29	Thanks for responces I would think a bigger engine would run hotter oil temps with same size cooler. Any suggestions on which oil thermostat to use? Summit catalog has generic units for $50 , Earls for $100 or Canton for $150. GDRE did not seem excited about using oil thermostat probably due to chance of failure. Thanks Herman

Registered User Posts: 3187 10/21/09 19:01:27	Did you run with shelby club? I'd block the cooler before adding additional components. I've done this in the past with water and oil and it works fine once you get a handle on how much to block.

Registered User Posts: 489 10/21/09 21:20:59	We would totally block the oil cooler on our car, but it still acted as a big enough heatsink to keep the oil from warming up. So the oil thermostat was much more effective, as it prevents about 90% of the oil from even reaching the cooler initally. Additionally, we used to have fun adding or subtracting tape to get the desired temp in varying conditions. After adding the oil thermostat we didn't even bother to tape the cooler at all, we let the thermostat take care of it. Just get a thermostat with big enough AN hose fittings (we used -10 hoses). Probably around $100 plus plumbing costs, and well worth the piece of mind. If I remember right I got ours from Pegasus. Marty Marty Bose - #1 Gopher, GonMad Racing

Registered User Posts: 91 10/22/09 11:32:46	Thanks Ted Marty and Tom. I have already tried the tape to reduce cooling and I agree the heat sink principle may still be too much cooling. I Auto-X and street this car and cannot understand why a Hayabusa will not heat the oil like the Honda 954 so I will try a oil thermostat. Ted, yes I was with the Shelby club. I hold them responsible for my addiction. They let me on T-hill a year ago with virtually no previous experience and I have been doing my best to support the racing economy since. Track days are a great ego boost when your CSR is not very competitive elsewhere. Herman

Registered User Posts: 3188 10/22/09 21:33:41	Herman, I have run with shelby club in the past, and almost ran last weekend as well. Good to know they still let real race cars run their events. The honda may have dumped more heat into the oil than the suzuki, or you're just not working the new motor as hard as the old one.

Registered User Posts: 92 10/23/09 17:49:17	Ted It may be a stretch to call my car a REAL race car; I will take it as a compliment. The #'s were down this year. There was also a Spec Ford there. A Mustang driven with hand controls. I get intimidated at a track day when 200K cars show with tires, wheels and brakes that cost more than your whole car. It can be easy to be complacent regarding track-days until a Life Flight shows up at the track. A Mustang got sideways off the track near turn #9 and rolled several times. The passengers helmet came off due to not attaching the strap. They reported later that the passenger was OK. Looking forward to having a REAL race car. Herman
