Scary accident today on the back straight in the third qualifying session for Sunday's race. I do not know what happened that caused the accident but I was coming down the back stretch and saw a red flag and Jim Downings car upside down by the barriers and a debris field. Two workers had just arrived and I ran to the accident and got under the car to assure Jim was OK and thank god he responded yes. With rain all night and in the first 2Q's today the ground was soggy. Under the car I could see the roll bar was below ground level and Jim's head was in the mud. The car is not easy to attach a bridle to turn it over and finally we had enough people to lift it up for Jim to exit on his own. Later inspection of the chassis it was apparent the main roll hoop failed and actually was leaning forward. Later I saw Jim and he looked fine.
The track is loaded with 42 cars and is crazy with traffic. We will have a split start tomorrow with open wheel 1st and closed wheel second. They will be into the formula car back markers quickly.
A large number of DSR's and CSR's will surely provide a great race as they navigate an overcrowded track with mixed groups.
The show will go on.
FYI Jim's CSR is pictures below. Best regards, Michael Crowe
