Yeah, it was kind of fun hearing one unmuffled small block Can-Am car running around Thunderhill. I'd forgotten how loud those things used to be when I went to all of the races at Laguna Seca back in the day!

Seems to me that Merle Brennan ran a Genie back in the USRRC days,I wonder if it still has the old Huffaker gearbox in it?

This car as well as 2 others Joe Huffaker built were there as part of the induction of people into the SF region hall of fame, Joe was there as one of the inductees.

Wow, blast from the past for me. I finally beat Merle in his Small block Genie at the SCCA National at Vacaville,Ca. on August 29,1971. in our big block chevy McGrew/Lenhart special. We called Merle "the silver fox." Man, could that guy drive smooooth. And this was in the day when bumpsteer was measured with a ruler. The front ends of those cars would rise 2-3 inches when you opened the throttle on the chevy engines. didn't always go where you thought it would.
Run around 1:08. at the real Laguna Seca old course.Flat throught turn 2 and float through turn 3. |

Greetings...maybe one of you recall, and have pictures of Dave's Genie Coupe, just before he died. Also, I am interested in locating his wife Sabra. We
are restoring the body now.

I've always liked this era of racing cars (as I am confident you are aware from previous threads...
Interestingly, one of the last 23's made was fitted with an Oldsmobile 244 CID all-aluminum V-8 for USRRC racing. The engine's power proved too much for the light-gauge tube frame, and after one professional race the car was parked and eventually sold off (and still resides here in NorCal, IIRC). Lotus went on to build the slightly bigger (4" wb, 2" track) Type 30/40 with a SBC, but even after several years of trying and numerous updates the design was not competitive against the Genies, McLarens and Chaparrels of the day. As a result Lotus withdrew from sports car racing and decided to concentrate on F-1 cars from then on. |

There was a Lotus 23 running in Texas back in the '60s that had a 1.5 liter F1 Coventry Climax V8 in the back....went like the hammers of hell. Paul Jett
owned/drove it as I recall. Wonder what happened to it.
